Cutting Torches
I Overview
Cutting torches use an oxygen-gas flame to melt and cut metal. These torches differ from those used for welding in that they use an additional blast of oxygen to oxidize the metal. The oxidized material has a lower melting point than the metal, so it melts and flows away.
II Applications
Cutting torches are used in a variety of applications, including the manufacture of jewelry and certain metal products, in scrap yards, and in automotive repair. Similar torches are also used for soldering, pre-weld heating, shrink wrapping, ham glazing, and metal brazing.
Natural gas cutting torches can often be substituted wherever acetylene or propane torches are used. Using natural gas as the fuel eliminates the need for cylinders, and can often provide significant cost savings over acetylene or propane.
